Testing the Waters: Floating home development in Florida

A 2013 U.S. Supreme Court ruling could lead to a first-of-its-kind floating home development in south Florida.

In 2005, Hurricane Wilma destroyed a pair of dilapidated marinas in North Bay Village where Fane Lozman, a former Marine pilot and software developer, kept a two-story floating home.
The Category 3 storm struck from the south, scattering splintered docks and other large debris into more than a dozen neighboring floating homes.
For years, Lozman had relished the camaraderie and convenience of living on Biscayne Bay, especially the easy access to deep-sea diving and fishing and his favorite Miami Beach restaurants. “Your speedboat was tied up right outside your front door. And you could enjoy the south Florida water lifestyle immediately and at any time,” he says.
After Lozman’s floating home, which had been docked at the north end of the marina community, emerged relatively unscathed, he quickly began looking for another place to anchor. In 2006, he had his home towed 70 miles north to Riviera Beach and rented a slip at a city-owned marina.
His new neighbors told him not to get too comfortable, however, because a planned, $2.4-billion marina redevelopment project soon would displace them. Lozman sued Riviera Beach to stop the project. And that led to another dispute, which eventually wound up before the U.S. Supreme Court.
In 2009, after failing to evict Lozman in state court, Riviera Beach went to federal court, seeking a lien for about $3,000 in dockage fees and nominal trespass damages.
The city argued that because Lozman’s floating home could move across water, it was a vessel under U. S. maritime law. A federal judge in Fort Lauderdale agreed, and the home was seized, sold at auction and destroyed by Riviera Beach, which cast the winning bid.
Lozman countered that his home was similar to an ordinary landbased house and should have been protected from seizure under state law. The home consisted of a 60-by- 12-foot plywood structure built on a floating platform — with no motor or steering — and could move only under tow.
Lozman’s appeal caught the Supreme Court’s eye. And in early 2013, it handed him a victory. Justice Stephen Breyer wrote in the majority opinion that because Lozman could not “easily escape liability by sailing away” and because he faced no “special sea dangers,” his home was not a vessel and not subject to seizure under maritime law. Lozman is still seeking compensation from Riviera Beach for his home’s destruction.
After the Supreme Court’s ruling, Kerri Barsh, a Greenberg Traurig attorney who helped argue Lozman’s case on appeal, contacted Netherlands-based Dutch Docklands, a developer of floating homes.
Founded in 2005 by architect Koen Olthuis and hotel developer Paul van de Camp, Dutch Docklands had designed hundreds of floating homes in Holland and was looking to expand to the United States. Barsh believed the high-court ruling created an opening for the company to pursue a first-of-its-kind floating home development in south Florida.
It meant, for example, that buyers could get a mortgage and homeowners insurance, though they’d also have to pay property taxes. The Coast Guard couldn’t enter their homes to inspect for life jackets and other safety measures — and “if a gardener or maid is injured on your property, you don’t have to comply with strict workers’ comp standards,” she says. “You also may be entitled to a homestead exemption.”
Dutch Docklands now is proposing a collection of multimilliondollar floating homes at a privately owned lake in North Miami Beach. Plans call for 29 man-made, private islands that are attached to the lake bottom with telescopic piles to guarantee stability.
Each island would cost an estimated $15 million and include a 7,000-sq.-ft. home, infinity pool, sandy beach and boat dockage, plus access to a 30th “amenity” island with clubhouse. The target market is celebrities and wealthy foreigners who want both privacy and proximity to downtown Miami, says Frank Behrens, a Miami-based executive vice president at Dutch Docklands.
“Buying your own island is a very complex process, and yet it’s a dream a lot of people aspire to,” he says. “Basically, what we’re offering is a way to realize that dream. Within two minutes, you can be on land and go to a Heat game or fancy restaurant.”
Historically, floating homes have not been widely embraced in Florida. A case in point is Key West’s Houseboat Row, which started in the 1950s as a playground for the rich, but in the 1970s deteriorated into floating shacks and live-aboards. In the 1990s, then-Mayor Dennis Wardlow repeatedly criticized Houseboat Row as an eyesore and environmental hazard. And by 2002, the community’s residents had been evicted and moved to a city-owned marina at Garrison Bight.
Today, the city marina has 35 floating homes and won’t accept any more. “We prefer to take in a registered marine vessel that’s Coast Guard certified,” says marina supervisor David Hawthorne. “Most marinas have moved out of it because of the liability, and there’s just more money in” short-term boat rentals.
To succeed in Florida, Dutch Docklands will have to change perceptions. The company promotes its brand of floating homes as a response to rising sea levels and climate change. And south Florida — as ground zero for sea level rise — could prove a receptive audience. Because of how they’re anchored, the floating homes move vertically with the tides, but not horizontally, enabling them to adapt to longterm climate changes and also hold steady in storms, Behrens says.
He hopes to begin construction next year at Maule Lake, a former limestone rock quarry with direct access to the Intracoastal Waterway. But his plans may be optimistic. The company recently filed for zoning approval and still faces questions about environmental impacts, the homes’ ability to withstand hurricanes and visual effects on the surrounding community.
“One of the big struggles we’ve had in this state is coming to grips with the fact that there’s a finite amount of land and water,” says Richard Grosso, a land-use and environmental law professor at Nova Southeastern University. “We tend to not recognize the importance of open space — the aesthetic and psychological value of it.”
Condominium towers — some pricier than others — surround Maule Lake. Behrens says local residents are understandably concerned about the project.
“If all of a sudden, a foreign developer comes and says, ‘Hey, we’re going to build private islands on this lake,’ I’d be upset, too,” he says. “But if you live in a $200,000 condo, and you get a $15-million private island on the lake in front of you, where a celebrity lives, you can imagine that the value of your real estate will go up.”
Even if all goes as planned for Dutch Docklands, it’s unlikely to spark copycat projects throughout Florida. Maule Lake presents “a pretty unique set of circumstances,” says Miami environmental lawyer Howard Nelson. At 174 acres, it’s big enough to accommodate a floating development without blocking boats — “and there’s very few bodies of water where the submerged land is privately owned,” says the Bilzin Sumberg attorney.
Meanwhile, Lozman has bought 29 acres of submerged land on the western shore of Singer Island in Palm Beach County. He says he’s talking with developers about building his own floating home community.
“I could see maybe 30 floating homes out there one day,” he says. “It would essentially duplicate the North Bay Village community that was destroyed in Wilma.”

Facing the city planning and climate changing challenges, the Dutch office Waterstudio.nl chooses to work principally towards flexible strategies and large scale floating architecture projects proposing sustainable solutions.

In the Netherlands, one quarter of the country being under sea level, the architects are considering the ways to rethink the built environment. Koen Olthuis (*1971) is one of them. Founder of Waterstudio, he studied architecture and industrial design at the Delft Technology University. As per his words, we treat our cities as if they were static and we don’t stop erecting fixed urban elements, which after 50 years become obsolete and useless. But the to-morrow’s city is dynamic, hybrid, flexible and environment friendly, a moving town, which reinvents itself constantly. The architect’s work is more precise in order to especially respond to the pressing needs of climatic changes. Koen Olthuis proposes to live on the water, with the water. The first town created in this spirit is under construction between The Hague and Rotterdam. Called « The New Water », this 1200 house urban development takes place in the polder zone, intentionally filled with water after a few centuries of artificial draining.
Strict rules limit the volume authorized above sea level. This constraint gives life to a rather sophisticated design and to interesting spatial solutions, particularly a naturally lighted basement, large glass surfaces, parts with wood and a white Corian® curved frame running along the façade. First one of the 6 buildings foreseen in this project, Citadel is also, with its 60 luxury apartments, the first floating building in Europe. Easy to reach from the side by a floating road, the building is composed of 180 modular elements, placed on concrete foundations. The norms are identical to those of a house on dry land. Another element of the New Water project’s first part: the Waterfront villa has a concrete base with a boathouse and a swimming pool. Three U-shaped volumes enable to optimize the viewpoints at each level. Corian® is used as the main covering material.
Waterstudio develops a revolutionary concept for the cruise ships terminal. A sculptural triangular floating construction (700 x 700 m) situated outside the bank, disposes of more than 160 000sqm of conference halls, cinemas, shopping areas, spas, restaurants, hotels, etc. The triangular ring raises at one place to create a smaller interior harbour. Covered with aluminium panels and partly with photovoltaic cells, the structure anchors itself to the seabed by cables with shock absorbers, enabling a vertical flexibility, whilst ensuring horizontal stability. Modern, light and transparent, the De Hoef villa shows in a concrete way that floating architecture has now reached the same level as its land counterpart. Realized with a steel frame, the construction is an amphibian structure, floating on water but surrounded by land on three sides. The choice of this type of structure results from the fact that « normal » houses are not allowed in this peat landscape.
With the project See Tree, Waterstudio proposes a new concept for the high-density urban green points. With many layers of trees, this floating structure, unattainable for man, uses the petrol offshore platforms’ technology. It would be the first 100% floating object designed and built for flora and fauna.

At the other end of the world, Koen Olthuis undertakes a huge project: design a floating town in the Maldives. The masterplan proposes a solution to the dramatic situation created by the rising sea level. These floating developments, especially, have a real positive impact on the poor communities living near the coast. The architect reminds that the most exposed cities are Mumbai, Dhaka and Calcutta because of their huge populations threatened by the water level increase. In these cities, millions of people live in dense slums along the water and are vulnerable to floods especially during the rainy season. “With the City Apps, based on standard maritime containers, we want to use the technical knowledge coming from our floating projects for the wealthy people.” They can be compared to Smartphone with applications adapted to different needs, such as a special programme for slums. In view of their flexibility and small size, the City Apps use the space available on water and are very convenient to be used as residences or schools, for instance.

The objective is to reach 10 000 containers in 5 years, rented in the whole world. “The importance given to slums has opened new opportunities and has put me in touch with many interesting and influential people who understand the necessity for the architects to use their influence and creativity to change the lives of millions of human beings, underlines also Koen Olthuis”.
His approach to improve the coastal towns throughout the world with these floating urban components is a real challenge. « It is just as if we had discovered a small part of the water potential to make the cities more resilient, sure and flexible. I believe that our projects and those of many architects, who use the floating technology as a tool, will open new norms for the cities ».

Floating solutions for upgrading wet-slums

Among the many challenges caused by the rise of global urban population is the accompanied growth of slum population. Around one billion people live in slums – most of them being close to open water. Being most vulnerable to floods, they are least attractive for upgrading investments. Neglected by civil authorities and confounded by a lack of space and money along with vulnerability, these already precarious slums are pushed into a negative spiral.

Using a bottom-up approach, the Floating City Apps Foundation, aims to upgrade waterfront slums with small scale instant solutions. Comparable to adjusting a smart phone with apps according to changing needs, the infrastructure in a slum can be adjusted by adding functions with City Apps.

These apps are floating developments built using a standard sea-freight container. The container is assembled in the Netherlands and shipped to the wet-slum where it is placed on a locally constructed floating foundation. Because of their flexibility and small size they are suitable for installing and upgrading facilities for sanitation, housing, communication etc. They can be added to a slum using the available space on water.

Naadloos Corian in gebogen vormen

Met Corian kan architect Koen Olthuis eindelijk de vormen maken die hij altijd al wild. Zonder randjes en andere ontsieringen. Hij paste het toe bij een villa in Naaldwijk in gebogen vormen en met strakke hoeken.

Intiem en Uitnodigend

Deze subtiele villa in boemerangvorm, gelegen in het Westland, prikkelt ieders verbazing en nieuwsgierigheid. De unieke architectuur is te danken aan Corian, het composiet waarvan de luxe woning zowel buiten als binnen is vervaardigd. zijn statige entree, vele glaswerk en vriendelijke ronde vormen maken het pand duidelijk en uitnodigend. De zijde die is gericht op het water en de weilanden, oogt rustig en intiem. Koen Olthuis van Waterstudio.nl realiseerde het tijdloze totaalconcept van gebouw, interieur en tuin.

WONINGEN DIE DRIJVEN OP HET WATER

Het in 2003 opgerichte Waterstudio.NL is gespecialiseerd in het bouwen van luxe woningen die drijven op het water. “We zijn nu een keer ‘vreemdgegaan’”, refereert architect, oprichter en eigenaar Koen Olthuis aan het project, dat op land is gesitueerd. De opdrachtgevers, een gezin met kinderen, maakten met hun locatie al deel uit van een groot steden-bouwkundig plan dat Waterstudio.NL voor het gebied had ontworpen. Hun eigen droomwoning wilden ze op landhoogte hebben. “Wij hebben dit pand hetzelfde behandeld als een drijvende woning”, zegt Olthuis. “Op water heb je een waterbodem; een betonnen bak waar de woning op staat. Die gebruik je om slaapkamers of technische ruimtes in te maken. Al onze kennis om ruimtes half onder water te gebruiken, konden we hier toepassen.” Door veel kubieke meters onder de grond te houden, kon Waterstudio.NL slim alle wensen en eisen van de klant invullen

PRODUCTARCHITECTUUR

“Onze ontwerpen zijn vrij duidelijk. Wij noemen dat readable architecture; vormen die goed herkenbaar zijn”, aldus Olthuis, die de afgelopen tien jaar veel heeft gewerkt met stuc en andere materialen, maar deze vrij lastig in onderhoud vond. “Zo’n drie geleden kwam Corian uit. Dit composiet doet precies wat wij wensen van materialen en biedt mij een vormgeving die ik heerlijk vind. Je kunt er vrijwel naadloos bochten mee maken en het gaat veel meer richting de productarchitectuur. Een product ziet er altijd en overal heel goed uit; zet een Porsche in de woestijn en hij is nog steeds prachtig. Een gebouw is vaak zeer afhankelijk van zijn omgeving; het moet reageren op de buren of het groen eromheen. Met dit materiaal en op deze locatie hadden we de kans om het hele terrein te ontwerpen én het pand als een product in het landschap neer te zetten.”

ALTIJD GOED FUNCTIONEREN

De voet van donker steen onder het pand staat bijna 1 meter 20 boven het normale peil, waardoor de woonkamer een geweldig uitzicht biedt op het rustgevende water. Van het stedelijk bouwkundig plan wist Olthuis dat die omgeving over een aantal jaar zou veranderen, met meer water en meer woningen op de weilanden. “Het pand moest dus nú mooi zijn, maar ook over tien jaar. En omdat overal glas zit, kan het pand heel goed in verschillende situaties functioneren, maar heb je ook écht het gevoel dat je buiten staat.” Tevens heeft hij het pand verbonden met het terrein. “Als je komt aanrijden, zie je het pand niet, omdat er een heuvel voor staat. We hebben een soort oprijlaan gemaakt dat om die berg heen zit. Heel organisch. Je rijdt daar ook langs het water, over een soort kleine boulevard.”

WONEN IN EEN BOEMERANG

De opdrachtgevers wilden verrast worden. Zij hadden hun eisen, maar gaven de architect alle vrijheid voor een totaalconcept van gebouw, interieur en tuin. Dat vertrouwen betaalde zich uit in de eerste verrassing: een boemerangvorm. “Ik wilde graag dat het pand een intieme kant en een uitnodigende kant heeft”, legt Olthuis uit. Uitnodigend is zeker de entree van zes meter hoog. Groot en statig, een nadrukkelijke wens van de opdrachtgevers. De traptreden leiden naar de optisch verscholen voordeur van gelakt red cederhout, die zeer stijlvol opent in een boog naar boven. De ontvangstruimte is al net zo indrukwekkend; een ronde kunstwand van bijna tien meter breed, die leidt naar de woonkamer óf naar de keuken en eetkamer. Ook kan men de trap naar beneden nemen, die via een gang vloeiend overgaat in een loungeruimte voor de kinderen en daarna naar de slaapkamers leidt. “Dat trappenhuis hebben we heel ruim opgezet, met op het hoogste punt een vier meter hoge designlamp van Stout.”

SYMMETRISCHE VORMEN

Op de begane grond blijkt het unieke effect van de boemerangvorm: op verschillende plekken in de woning kan men de buitenkant van het gebouw ervaren. Ook ingenieus is de oplossing voor de opdrachtgevers’ affiniteit met symmetrie. “We mochten niet teveel kubieke meters maken, maar het pand had die symmetrische vormen wel nodig, dus moesten we het gebouw vullen met lucht.” Boven de terrassen zijn balken geplaatst, zodat de buitenruimtes een deel van de woning lijken te zijn, maar niet meetellen als kubieke meters. “Om op de juiste hoeveelheid kubieke meters uit te komen, hebben we de vorm uitgerold.”

HET GEVOEL VAN EEN TOTAALONTWERP

Symmetrie zien we ook terug in het interieur. “We wilden er rust in brengen, het moest hetzelfde gevoel en dezelfde vormgeving uitstralen. Er staan heel weinig losse meubels; we hebben vaste kasten gemaakt die waanzinnig mooi overgaan in de wanden, maar ook vaste keukenelementen, een eettafel en een vaste openhaard met een boekenkast eromheen. Het gebouw is dan bijna af, je voelt dat het een totaalontwerp is.” Dat de keuken een belangrijke plek is voor het gezin, heeft Waterstudio.NL extra benadrukt door deze centraal in de woning te plaatsen. Het keukenblok is aan de zijkant met kussens bekleed en de afzuiging zit in de dekking weggewerkt. “En omdat je een heel harde woning maakt, met een harde vloer, harde wanden en veel glas, moet je ervoor zorgen dat het niet gaat galmen. Daarom zit er een akoestisch plafond in; héél zacht, volledig gespoten en zeer dempend.”

LICHT EN PRIVACY

Op het grote open terras prijkt een luxe loungeproduct van WoodCruise, dat automatisch draait naar de juiste stand van de zon. “Dit fantastische kunstvoorwerp is uitgevoerd in dezelfde houtsoort als het boothuis, dat zich samen met de boot bevindt in een eilandje op het eigen terrein, waar de bewoners naartoe kunnen varen.” Achterin het terras zien we een gat, veilig afgeschermd door een glazen balustrade. Drie meter daaronder bevindt zich een ander terras, maar zijn ook de slaapkamer, badkamer en sauna gesitueerd. Deze privéruimtes hebben opvallend veel licht en privacy en vormen – wederom – één geheel. De sauna, het aanrecht en de omlijstingen van de spiegels zijn gemaakt van dezelfde houtsoort en de douche en het toilet zijn omkaderd met glas. De schitterende kroonluchter spiegelt fraai in dit glas en in de antracietwanden bij de douche. Op wens is een walking closet gerealiseerd, in kader van optimaal comfort is boven het bed een televisie in het plafond geïntegreerd. De wellness is ontworpen door Waterstudio.NL in samenwerking met Versteegh-Design en gerealiseerd door VSB Wellness.

TIJDLOOS KARAKTER

De tuinindeling, tot slot, is heel rustig; met bamboes, kleine grassen en kunstgrassen die geleidelijk overgaan in het echte gras van de weilanden. “Prachtig, mooier dan ik gehoopt had”, aldus Koen Olthuis. Hij looft het tijdloze karakter van het – inmiddels internationaal geprezen – project, maar ook de durf van de opdrachtgevers om hem de vrijheid te geven. De ervaren architect vat zijn tevredenheid samen in één conclusie: “Deze woning klopt.”

Onderscheidend en onverslijtbaar

Een designvilla aan de waterkant in het Westland kreeg tijdloze allure door een high-tech gevelbekleding van DuPont Corian in de kleur Cameo White. DuPoint Corian is populair bij architecten en interieurontwerpers, omdat het naadloos kan worden verwerkt en praktisch onverslijtbaar is. Om precies die redenen wordt het solid surface steeds vaker ook toegepast op buitengevels.

Architect Koen Olthuis van Waterstudio.NL in Rijswijk vertelt: ‘Bouwen aan het water stelt bijzondere materiaaleisen. Voor die moeilijke omstandigheden is DuPont™Corian® de ideale oplossing. Pleisterwerk wordt na verloop van tijd altijd lelijk, terwijl dit product ongevoelig is voor vocht en weersinvloeden. De gevel blijft er vele tientallen jaren uitzien zoals op de eerste dag. Dat is praktisch en efficiënt, trouwens ook als een gebouw niet aan het water staat.’ Minstens zo belangrijk is dat met DuPont™Corian® speciale effecten bereikt kunnen worden. De opdrachtgever van de villa wilde iets bijzonders. ‘Voor ons geen landhuis met een rieten dak. We wilden een woning die over vijftig jaar nog steeds modern is.’

Architect Olthuis ontwierp een spectaculaire villa met opvallende rondingen in DuPont™Corian®. Hij zegt: ‘Dit materiaal is zo inspirerend, ik ontdek nog steeds nieuwe mogelijkheden.’ De opdrachtgever was meteen verkocht. ‘We hebben niets meer gewijzigd aan het exterieur,’ zegt hij.

Architect Olthuis zoekt altijd de grens op tussen gebouw en product. ‘Wellicht doordat ik ook een achtergrond heb in industrieel ontwerpen,’ zegt hij. ‘DuPont™Corian® stelt me in staat een gebouw exact te realiseren zoals ik het bedoeld heb. Naadloos, zonder afleidende details als dakranden, kozijnen en dakoverhangen. Want dat leidt allemaal af van de essentie.’
Bij de watervilla in het Westland zijn de gevels met hun prachtig afgeronde randen echte blikvangers. DuPont™Corian® werd zowel in het verticale als in het horizontale vlak verwerkt. Ook alle terrasranden en de minimalistische omkasting van de strakke zonneschermen zijn uitgevoerd in de kleur Cameo White.

Met zoveel DuPont™Corian® was de villa geen standaard opdracht voor Van Leent Bouwbedrijf. Deze aannemer wist de praktische mogelijkheden van het materiaal echter optimaal te benutten en realiseerde het uitdagende project op tijd en binnen de begroting.

DuPont™Corian® is onverwoestbaar. Het is resistent en niet poreus. Weer en wind hebben er geen invloed op. Het is zeer gemakkelijk schoon te maken. ‘Deze gevels zijn volkomen glad. Over tientallen jaren zijn ze nog als nieuw,’ belooft Olthuis. En al die tijd is er vrijwel geen onderhoud nodig.

De duurzaamheid gaat nog verder. Want DuPont™Corian® kan altijd weer verwijderd en opnieuw gebruikt worden. Al wijst niets erop dat deze gevelbekleding ooit van zijn plaats zal komen.

Sea Trees , a beautiful way to save the cities

In many of the world’s fast-growing cities, there isn’t enough room for people to live, let alone wildlife. Our friends beneath us in the food chain are becoming increasingly marginalized—world wildlife populations have decreased by about half over the last 40 years alone. Now, there’s a plan to give urban homes back to wildlife. But these homes aren’t quite urban. They’re, essentially, giant floating trees.

Waterstudio, a Dutch architectural firm that specializes in designing floating structures, wants to erect “Sea Trees” in major cities. The structures are multi-tiered, tree-shaped habitats that float near urban areas and could provide sanctuary for birds, bees, bats and small aquatic creatures that might not be cut out for city living in the 21st century.

Based on the technology in oil storage towers, the trees have multiple platforms for accommodating wildlife. The underwater portion can house fish and other sea creatures and even provide an artificial coral reef in climates that will allow it.

Koen Olthius, Waterstudio’s founder, told Fast Company that the concept is ready to be implemented as soon as possible. “Our favorite locations would be Mumbai or New York,” he said. “Both have such a high price on land that it makes the construction of new park zones on land not feasible.”

According to Waterstudio, the design would cost approximately 1 million euros ($1.23 million) to build. The idea, of course, may never actually come to fruition, but it looks like a clever and innovative way for cities to give refuge to animals that badly need it

Hollandalı mimarlık pratiği Waterstudio.NL’nin ülkenin güneyinde gerçekleştirdiği “Villa New Water” projesi, DuPont™Corian® dış cephe uygulaması ile hem tarz hem bakım anlamında minimalist bir tasarım ortaya koyuyor.

“Su kenarındaki yapı, özel gereklilikler demektir”

Hollanda’nın güneyindeki Westland belediyesi kıyı şeridinde bulunan villa tasarımında kullanılan Cameo White rengindeki DuPont™Corian® dış cephe kaplaması, yapıya zamansız bir zarafet katıyor.

Waterstudio.NL kurucusu mimar Koen Olthuis , tasarımlarının önemli bir bileşeni olan bu malzemeyi şöyle değerlendiriyor:

“Su kenarında bulunan bir yapı, özel yapı gereklilikleri demektir. DuPont™Corian® ise bu zorlu hava koşulları için ideal bir çözümdür. Bir süre sonra, sıvalar göze hoş görünmemeye başlar. Ancak bu malzeme nem ve havanın etkilerine karşı dayanıklıdır. Bundan yıllar sonra bile bu dış cephe kaplaması yapıldığı günkü kadar iyi gözükecektir. Bu malzemeyi tercih edişini endüstriyel tasarım geçmişiyle ilişkilendiren Hollandalı mimar, “DuPont™Corian®, yapıları hayalimde öngördüğüm gibi gerçekleştirmeme olanak sağlıyor. Saçak, pencere çerçeveleri ve çatı çıkıntıları gibi rahatsız edici ve tasarımın özünden uzaklaştıran ayrıntılar olmadan kesintisiz bir yüzey yaratabiliyorum.”

Westland’de su kenarında bulunan villanın yuvarlatılmış hatlara sahip dış cephesi gözalıcı bir tasarıma sahip. DuPont™ Corian® projede hem yatay hem de dikey yüzeylerde kullanılırken, balkon kenarları ve güneş koruyucuların minimalistik kaplamalarında Cameo White rengi tercih edilmiş.

Koen Olthuis, tamamen pürüzsüz bir dokuya sahip dış cephe kaplamasının yıllar geçse de görüntüsünü koruyacağına ve neredeyse hiçbir bakım gerektirmeyeceğine dikkat çekiyor. DuPont™Corian®’ın çevresel faydası da oldukça fazla çünkü bu cephe kaplaması değişim gerektirmese bile, her zaman çıkarılıp yeniden kullanılabiliyor.

Malzemenin avantajları iç mekana da taşındı

Malzemeyi villanın iç uygulamalarında da kullanan Olthuis, iç mekanda kullanım için dikey düzlemde sorunsuz şekilde değişen yüzeyle farklı bir ada mutfak tasarladı.

Olthuis’a göre, suya, asidik malzemelere ve yüksek sıcaklığa dayanıklı bu malzeme, mutfaklar için mükemmel bir alternatif sunuyor. Mutfak dolapları da yine aynı malzemeden imal edilirken, pürüzsüz yüzeylerle kontrast yaratmak amacıyla bazı kapak panelleri yumuşak dolgu etkisi kullanılarak monte edildi.

Yemek pişirme adası ve mutfak dolapları, Cameo White renkli DuPont™Corian® solid yüzey malzemesi kullanılarak yapıldı.
